One drop can generate 40 volts of #electricity. A group of #italian researchers has developed an energy harvesting device that can be incorporated into #plants to generate electricity from #raindrops and wind. The device consists of artificial leaves placed between the leaves of real plants, with a layer of silicone elastomer underneath that generates and collects static electricity as the leaves move in the #wind. Additionally, the top of the #artificial #leaf has a protective layer of fluorinated ethylene which, when wet, charges the surface and creates a capacitor by connecting electrodes embedded in the leaf. The researchers tested the device by inserting it into an oleander leaf and found that a single drop of #water could generate voltage and current spikes in excess of 40 volts and 15 microamperes. This is enough to power 11 LED lights.
