Auli is a picturesque hill station and a popular skiing destination in Uttarakhand, India, located in the Chamoli district. It is situated at an altitude of 2,500 to 3,050 meters (8,200 to 10,000 feet) above sea level in the Garhwal Himalayas. Auli offers stunning panoramic views of majestic peaks like Nanda Devi (7,816 m), Mana Parvat, and Kamet. It is well known for its snow-covered slopes, making it a premier skiing destination in India, with international-standard skiing facilities. Apart from skiing, Auli is famous for trekking routes, meadows (Bugyals), and the Auli Ropeway, which is one of the longest cable cars in India, covering 4 km between Joshimath and Auli which is closed for last 2 years. The region experiences heavy snowfall in winters (December–February), transforming it into a winter wonderland, while summers (April–June) offer lush green landscapes and pleasant weather. The artificial Auli Lake, one of the world's highest man-made lakes, helps maintain snow cover for skiing. Auli is also rich in religious and historical significance, with nearby attractions like Joshimath, Narsingh Temple, and the Badrinath. To reach Auli- Auli can be reached via air, rail, and road. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (270 km), with taxis and buses available to Joshimath, from where a ropeway or taxi takes you to Auli. The closest railway stations are Haridwar (290 km), Rishikesh (270 km), and Dehradun (290 km), with buses and taxis running to Joshimath. By road, Auli is 270kms from Rishikesh where we can reach auli while passing through Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, and Joshimath. About Stays- Auli can be a bit expensive when it comes to accommodations, especially during the peak winter season (December–February). Luxury cottages and resorts can cost up to ₹15,000 per night, offering premium amenities and stunning views of the snow-covered Himalayas. However, if you're looking for a budget-friendly stay and a more immersive experience, consider staying in Auli village or nearby Joshimath.
