The Ghazipur landfill, established in 1984 on a 70-acre site in East Delhi, has become one of the city’s most pressing environmental hazards. It was originally intended to close by 2002, but it continues to operate and now towers over 60 metres, almost as tall as the Qutub Minar. Over 8 to 10 million tonnes of waste have accumulated there, and around 3,000 to 3,500 tonnes of fresh municipal solid waste are dumped daily, worsening its environmental footprint. This massive garbage mountain emits high levels of methane and is prone to spontaneous fires. Decomposing organic matter under anaerobic conditions releases potent greenhouse gases, making the landfill a significant source of methane emissions. These emissions often cause fires, particularly during the summer months, covering surrounding areas with toxic smoke and worsening air quality. Additionally, leachate from the landfill seeps into nearby drains and eventually enters the Yamuna river, raising concerns over groundwater and river contamination. Safety issues have added to the crisis. Reports have flagged cracks on the landfill surface, absence of proper boundary walls near canals, and inadequate systems for containing leachate. In the past, there have been tragic incidents of landslides at the landfill, which buried vehicles and claimed lives. In response, authorities have accelerated efforts to manage the situation. Biomining of legacy waste has begun to flatten the dump within the next few years, aiming to eliminate the methane hazard. Plans are underway to establish a waste-to-energy plant at the site and expand 24×7 waste processing capacity to handle the daily inflow efficiently. Despite these efforts, thousands of people living near the landfill continue to suffer from health problems such as respiratory illnesses due to persistent toxic emissions and poor air quality. While officials aim to remediate the landfill completely by 2027, sustained improvement will require consistent implementation of waste segregation practices, effective processing systems, and community cooperation to prevent the creation of new garbage mountains in the future.
