Parallel Lives: The Apostles Peter, Paul and Sta. Maria Goretti June 29, 2024 | Saturday Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, ApostlesActs 12:1-11Psalm 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-92 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18Matthew 16:13-19 Biblical: Today we celebrate the solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, at the same time we celebrate the 3rd day of our Novena to our patron saint, St. Maria Goretti. Saints Peter, Paul, and Maria Goretti—if there is one commonality among these three saints, it is that they are all martyrs. They all died for the faith and for Jesus Christ. Saint Peter: He died for his faith during the time of Emperor Nero in Rome. He was crucified upside down because he felt unworthy to die in the same manner as Jesus. Saint Paul: He was imprisoned in Rome, where he wrote several letters (epistles) during his captivity. There were no exact details of his death, but tradition tells us that he was martyred by Emperor Nero through beheading. Saint Maria Goretti: At a very young age, she knew what purity was. She protected it until her death, when a man by the name of Alessandro Serenelli tried to rape her. Maria fought against Alessandro and told him she would be more willing to die than to fall into sin. She was stabbed 14 times in the heart, lungs and intestines with a knife. Reflection: Ang aga-aga patayan ang pinag-uusapan natin. Their deaths are not just ordinary deaths, nor are they seen by them as punishment, but as an offering. Karumal-dumal man sa paningin, ang kanilang kamatayan ay may hatid na kabanalan dahil ito ay inalay alang-alang sa pagmamahal. Biblical: All these three saints were just ordinary people before they knew Jesus. Peter was a fisherman. Paul was a pharisee and participated in the persecution of early disciples of Jesus. Maria Goretti was a poor peasant child who worked all she could to be able to help her family. All of them willingly gave up their lives for Jesus. Peter gave up his livelihood and followed Jesus. Paul had his conversion upon knowing Jesus. He gave up being a pharisee to become an apostle. Maria Goretti did not hesitate to give up her life just to be pure for Jesus Christ. Reflection: Ito ang katangian ng isang martir, kayang isuko ang lahat sa ngalan ng pag-ibig. No one could ever understand this language of love but also a martyr. Because only a strong and willed heart could understand a similar heart. My dear brothers and sisters, Martyrdom is the love language of the brave, not because he is not afraid. But he fears God more than the grave.
