For many years the women of the Gabra tribe have been responsible for building houses in the their community. This is a tradition that is still alive today, and for 1000's of years they have been the main Architects in their tribe. I this video I not only seek to recognize their contributions to their culture but seek to destigmatize the notion that African architecture is primitive and that the African traditions have contributed to the oppression of women. On the contrary the Gabra tribe traditions defy this ideology because women are celebrated and acknowledged as an equal pillar in building and sustaining their community. So where did we go wrong? How comes in the modern day setting these women architects are few? If we invested in these women and build their indigenous knowledge to keep improving on their craft where could the community be right now? Many talk of rebuilding Africa, but will African be solely be rebuilt with modern day knowledge which excludes our indigenous identities and the foundational beauty that was used and manipulated to create modern day inventions or will we make an effort to go back in time and relearn, and rebuild the beautiful parts of our culture and heritage that were intentionally destroyed during the Colonial era?
