On this date 150 years ago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art officially incorporated in New York City. Each year, more than seven million visitors view the extraordinary variety of more than 5,000 years of art, much of it inspired by the Bible. A painting from 1642 by Dutch Artist Gerbrand van den Eeckhout captures the scene from Genesis of Jacob receiving his father, Isaac’s, blessing through trickery. From circa 1600, an oil painting by Annibale Carracci depicts Jesus approaching his cousin, John, to be baptized. From the 14th century, “The Last Supper” by Ugolino da Sienain in tempera and gold on wood. And scores of sculptures, carvings, and graphic images of creation, miracles, and the crucifixion, all displayed in three buildings in Manhattan.
