Inside Sara Mungeam’s Ripple House: A Bold Micro-Development in London

In today’s episode, we explore the Ripple House in South East London with micro developer Sara Mungeam, a design-led project built on a challenging, awkward plot that has been completely reimagined into three thoughtfully designed homes. What was once a dilapidated studio and two small flats has been transformed into a cohesive development, centred around a striking curved façade and distinctive “ripple” brickwork that gives the project its name. Inside, Sara shares how she approached the layout and material palette to maximise light, space and practicality. From central courtyards that flood the interiors with natural light, to layered lighting, engineered wood flooring and bespoke joinery, every detail has been carefully considered. The use of texture, from exposed joists and birch ply cabinetry to soft lime wash walls and terrazzo finishes, creates a modern, Scandinavian-inspired aesthetic that still feels warm and liveable. Throughout the project, the focus remains on smart, functional design, from clever storage solutions using IKEA carcasses with bespoke fronts, to pocket doors, walk-in wardrobes and carefully planned layouts that enhance everyday living. This is a great example of how thoughtful design decisions, material consistency and attention to detail can turn a complex site into a beautifully resolved, design-led home.
