Most of the bariatric procedures in my practice are done via robotically assisted surgery. Patients often think robotic surgery involves a robot performing the operation using its own set program or artificial intelligence. This isn't the case! Robotic surgery is actually more easily compared to a pilot flying a drone. The surgeon is in control of each and every movement the robot makes by working at a control console inside the operating room, just feet from the patient. Operating room staff and anesthesia providers still work at the patient's side during the operation and the surgeon is in control of the operation. Many of the benefits of the surgical robotic are in the small size and precision of the robot's instruments and movements. Robotic instruments work much like tiny human hands with 360 degree, wristed motion and offer the surgeon incredible range of motion with little disruption to the abdomen. Incisions are smaller, risk is decreased, the surgeon's view is improved and surgeons experience less fatigue.
