Fast Drill Press Fence Upgrade

We really enjoy the PowerMatic® V2800 Drill press we have! Unlike the usual metalworking approach, this machine was designed with the woodworker in mind, including a spiffy adjustable multi-function aluminum guide fence. The fence adjusts in the usual manner in the miter t-slots in the tabletop, allowing you to set the distance from the edge to center point of the hole being drilled. This gives accuracy and repeatability using one set up. The PowerMatic® fence goes a couple of steps further, with the fence splitting in the center, and having an integrated dust port. Heck, the fence is made with extrusions that fit typical “t-slot” fixtures for stops and hold-downs. It’s a winner! But, we have a gripe. The knobs that are used to secure the position of the fence on the table are really short. They are hard to grasp, they are behind the fence (where they have to be), and they are difficult to get adequate leverage with. Using them can be a “knuckle-scraper!”. Fortunately, there’s an EASY fix. In this episode, DirtFarmerJay shows you a simple modification to lengthen the knobs so they are taller, easier to access and provide a better grip. This is accomplished with epoxy, threaded rod, and a coupling nut. While it’s really simple, the benefit is immediate and you’ll find yourself more readily making the needed adjustments instead of avoiding the hassle of dealing with the shorter knobs.
