Promoting Sustainability by Engaging the Private Sector in Conservation

Tourism in Tanzania contributes an estimated 17.2% of GDP and 25% of total foreign exchange earnings in the country. Given that 80% of tourists come to view wildlife, the tourism sector depends on conservation of wildlife for its revenue. Thus, Tanzania depends on wildlife conservation for the economic growth of the country. This close link between tourism and conservation presented an obvious entry point for USAID’s Promoting Tanzania’s Environment Conservation and Tourism (PROTECT) activity to engage directly with the tourism private sector at the national and local levels, to promote economic growth and promote biodiversity conservation in Tanzania.
