The Jacupiranga Metamorphosis: A Study in Light and Space

#house #architecture #housedesign The Jacupiranga House, a 400m² residence nestled within the verdant embrace of Jardim América, São Paulo, presented a unique challenge to CR2 Arquitetura. The existing structure, characterized by its somber palette, compartmentalized layout, and diminutive window frames, fostered an atmosphere of perpetual twilight. This inherent darkness permeated the interior spaces, casting a long shadow over the potential for a bright and welcoming home. Furthermore, the allocation of space within the 15x42m plot seemed ill-proportioned. A substantial portion of what could have been a lush garden had been sacrificed to accommodate circulation, bedrooms, and a laundry area, leaving the overall site feeling cramped and confined. The architects were tasked with a renovation, but a complete demolition of the main structure was deemed out of the question. This constraint demanded a creative approach, one that would respect the existing framework while simultaneously transforming it into a more luminous and spacious dwelling. The primary structural intervention focused on the elimination of the service block and the two walls that enclosed it. This strategic removal opened up a significant area of opportunity, allowing for a complete reconfiguration of the ground floor layout. In the space liberated by the demolition, a new construction emerged. This addition housed a thoughtfully designed bathroom and a kitchen that seamlessly flowed into the dining room, effectively expanding the social heart of the house. These newly created spaces, along with the reintegration of the previously displaced service functions, breathed new life into the ground floor, creating a more functional and cohesive living area. The entire new block was clad in Accoya wood, a choice that proved both aesthetically pleasing and practically advantageous. The rich, warm tones of the wood served to camouflage the various doors and entrances to the newly created spaces, creating a sense of visual unity and tranquility. This cohesive cladding also contributed to a more seamless integration of the new construction with the existing structure, blurring the lines between old and new.
