Henri Mosson turns 100 years old on November 25, 2024. The former resistance fighter is the last survivor of the Natzwiller-Struthof camp (in Alsace region), the only Nazi concentration camp in France. France Télévisions met him. In the heart of the Alsatian forest, the memory of Nazi barbarism still remains. Watchtowers and a gallows are the remains of the terrible Natzwiller-Struthof camp, the only concentration camp in France. It was built in 1941, when Alsace was German, annexed by the Third Reich. At Struthof and its annex camps, 50,000 deportees went through hell. Henri Mosson was number 6,290. The former Resistance fighter was arrested in Dijon and tortured by the Gestapo, before being deported to the camp in Alsace. At the age of 100, he is one of the last witnesses. "It was appalling...I saw people who weighed 28 kilos", he recalls. He shared the ordeal of resistance fighters and political prisoners from all over Europe. The camp was built for them, nicknamed ‘NN’ by the Nazis, for "Nacht-und-Nebel", "Night and Fog". 17,000 people died there, including 8,000 French, and the site is now a place of remembrance. We ate whatever was available...lots of boiled kohlrabi, a slice of bread, theoretically 200 grams a day, theoretically...I saw people who weighed 28 kilos. All they had was skin and bones." From the moment they entered the camp, when they had ‘NN’ status ("Nacht und Nebel": night and fog), they had to disappear in the greatest secrecy, without a trace. We have accounts of particularly terrible roll calls, where prisoners collapse and are supported by their comrades to stay on their feet, because you have to remain completely upright and motionless during the roll call." The idea was to have fragments for the future, after the disappearance of the Jews, that students could study, that could be seen in museums, like a collection of fossils in a museum."
