Vicki Crowley reads from her Memoir 'Beyond the Ghibli' at Kennys Bookshop and Art Gallery, in advance of the official launch there on Friday 11th December 2015. BEYOND THE GHIBLI The author’s commentary about life in Southern Europe and various parts of Africa during the 40s, 50s and 60s give a rare insight on prevailing customs, traditions and conditions which she observed and recorded. Often living in isolated areas in the African bush, she home-schooled her children and cared for a menagerie of orphaned animals. There were, however, real dangers that presented from time to time, such as a coup d’état in Sierra Leone, poisonous snakes and malaria, which finally prompted a final move to the West of Ireland in 1970. About Vicki Crowley: Born in Malta during the relentless bombings of World War II, visual artist Vicki Crowley describes her life during her 30 year odyssey from Malta to Erirea, Libya, Gibraltar, Sierra Leone and Cameroon until eventually settling in the West of Ireland in 1970 with her Galway born husband and their children. In this memoir, she poignantly describes her childhood separations, boarding school and life in post colonial Africa and candidly gives first hand accounts of the historical events and social conditions she experienced in her travels. Working from her studio in Barna, Co. Galway, Vicki Crowley has exhibited her paintings extensively in Ireland and abroad where her work can be found in many private and public collections. She has had many prestigious commissions from churches all over Ireland where her stained glass window designs, paintings and other elements in stone and metal are installed. Her illustrated collection of poetry Oasis In A Sea Of Dust was published by Salmon Publishing in 1992. She remains an intrepid traveller and has to date trekked in all the continents of the world whilst gathering inspiration for her artwork along the way. Order on www.kennys.ie
