30 Minutes of Sights & Sounds London Underground 1992 Stock Half an hour of sights and sounds of the 1992 Stock trains operated by London Underground on the Central Line under the streets of the capital to the county of Essex. The 1992 Stock was manufactured for London Underground by BREL and ABB to replace the 1962 Stock trains, which were at the time approaching nearly 30 years old. BREL/ABB was chosen to build the 1992 Stock after their prototype vehicles of 1986 proved to be the most popular with passengers on the Jubilee Line. In 1991, London Underground placed an order for 85 eight car units, which would be built at BREL's Works in Derby. In 1992, British Rail Network SouthEast placed an order for 5 four car units for use on the Waterloo & City Line (a topic for another video). All units were delivered to Ruislip Depot at the Western end of the Central Line for testing before entering service. The 1992 Stock were the first trains on London Underground to feature an automated announcement system giving an audible message of the next station. Today, the 1992 Stock continues to provide service on one of, if not the busiest tube line on the London Underground Network, the trains are currently going through a refurbishment which will see passenger information screens installed aswell as new lighting, wheel chair spaces and a new AC traction system... but, with the New Tube for London project under way, how long will the 1992 Stock be seen in Central London?
