Worship 2026 Will Be More Than Songs - Psalm 96

1. Introduction – Worship Begins with God As we begin a new year, we are not starting with plans, goals, or resolutions. We are starting with worship. Scripture is clear: before God sends His people, before He shapes their lives, before He unites them in mission, He calls them to Himself. Worship does not begin with our desire, our mood, or our creativity. It begins with God’s revelation. We do not gather because we feel ready to worship. We gather because God has already made Himself known and has called His people to respond. Psalm 96 is not a technical manual on worship. It is a divine summons: “Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth!” (v.1) 2. Worship Begins with Joyful Proclamation (vv. 1–3) Three times the psalmist commands us: “Sing to the LORD.” This is not about musical ability. It is about glad allegiance. Biblical worship always begins with: Joy, not obligation Declaration, not performance God’s glory, not self-expression “Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous works among all peoples.” (v.3) Worship is never meant to be private therapy. It is public testimony. When the church sings, we confess together what we believe to be true about God — even when circumstances argue otherwise. Our songs become shared declarations of faith. 3. Worship Is Rooted in the Greatness of God (vv. 4–6) Why do we worship? “For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised.” (v.4) The psalmist contrasts the LORD with idols. Idols are made. The LORD made the heavens. True worship is never sustained by emotion alone. It is sustained by truth. This is why worship must be rooted in God’s Word. If Scripture is thin, worship becomes shallow. But where the Word of Christ dwells richly, worship becomes durable, reverent, and God-honouring. We cannot worship God rightly unless we know Him as He truly is — and we only know Him as He has revealed Himself in His Word. 4. Worship Is a Whole-Life Offering (vv. 7–9) The language now shifts from singing to ascribing and bringing: “Ascribe to the LORD glory and strength… bring an offering.” Worship is not confined to a song set or a service order. It includes our obedience, our service, our holiness, and our daily lives. What we worship shapes who we become. Biblical worship does not merely express devotion — it forms disciples. This is why worship carries weight. It costs us something. And in that cost, God shapes His people for His glory. 5. Worship Forms and Unites God’s People (vv. 10–12) “Say among the nations, ‘The LORD reigns!’” Worship reminds the church of what is true: God is on the throne History is not random Justice and righteousness will prevail In uncertain times, worship anchors God’s people together. Before we belong to preferences, personalities, or traditions, we belong to one King, one people, and one mission. Worship unites us not around style, but around truth. We do not gather because life is easy. We gather because God is worthy. 6. Worship Sends Us on Mission (v. 13) The psalm ends by lifting our eyes forward: “For He comes, for He comes to judge the earth.” This points us ultimately to Christ: The righteous King The coming Judge The gracious Saviour True worship never ends with “Amen.” It sends God’s people back into the world — changed, grounded, and faithful. Gathered worship fuels scattered witness. 7. Conclusion – Setting the Tone for the Series Psalm 96 shows us that worship is: God-centred Word-shaped Life-transforming Church-forming Mission-sending That is why we are beginning here. In the weeks ahead, we will explore: The Heart of Worship Rooted in the Word Transformed Lives Unity Together Song and Spirit Worship as Mission But today, the call is simple and clear: Sing to the LORD. Live for His glory. Proclaim His reign. Worship is not a department of the church. It is the atmosphere in which God forms His people for His glory.
