An abscess from a nail prick injury occurs when bacteria enter the body through the small puncture wound caused by the nail, leading to an infection that can develop into a localized collection of pus. Nail puncture wounds are particularly concerning because they can introduce bacteria deep into tissues, especially if the nail was dirty or rusted. When a nail punctures the skin, it creates a small but deep wound, potentially driving dirt, bacteria, or foreign material into the tissue. If the wound does not heal properly, bacteria — especially Staphylococcus aureus or Pseudomonas species — can multiply, causing the body to respond by sending white blood cells to fight the infection. This response leads to the formation of pus, creating an abscess. Symptoms Localized pain: The puncture site becomes increasingly painful. Swelling: Swelling may occur around the wound as the abscess forms. Redness and warmth: The skin around the abscess becomes red and warm to the touch. Pus drainage: As the abscess matures, it may begin to drain yellow or white pus. Difficulty moving: If the abscess is on the foot or near a joint, walking or moving the affected area can be painful. Fever and chills: In more severe cases, systemic symptoms such as fever, chills, and feeling unwell can develop, indicating the infection is spreading. Complications Cellulitis: The infection can spread to the surrounding skin, causing widespread redness and swelling. Osteomyelitis: If untreated, the infection can spread to the underlying bone, causing a serious condition known as osteomyelitis. Tetanus: If the nail was rusted or contaminated and the person’s tetanus vaccination is not up to date, there is a risk of tetanus, a potentially life-threatening bacterial infection that affects the nervous system.
