In the annals of the Wild West, few characters stand out like Billy the Kid, the notorious gunman and outlaw. However, behind every legendary figure, there are often silent companions whose stories are still overshadowed. One such figure was Tom O'Folliard, Billy the Kid's close friend during the tumultuous Lincoln County War that would engrave his name in the infamous chronicle. In this video, we dive into the life of Tom O'Folliard, explore his role as the most evil outlaw in the Lincoln County War and his enduring relationship with Billy the Kid. Thomas Big Foot O'Folliard, a notorious outlaw and Billy the Kid's companion, holds the position of second-in-command in Billy the Kid's Gang. He was born to Irish immigrant parents in 1858 but they tragically died of smallpox when he was a boy. Raised by relatives in Uvalde, Texas, Thomas embarked on a life of crime by participating in horse theft with Emil Fritz, who later joined as a gunman in the Lincoln County War in New Mexico. Through Fritz's influence, O'Folliard ventured to New Mexico, where he met the infamous Billy the Kid. Together, they and Fritz allied with Alexander McSween's side in the Lincoln County War. It was during this conflict that O'Folliard was hit in the shoulder by a bullet wound. On February 18, 1878, a group of law enforcement officers arrested Tunstall as he was accompanied by ranchers Richard Dick Brewer, Billy the Kid, John Middleton, Henry Newton Brown, Robert A. Widenmann and Fred Waite. They were in the process of herding Tunstall's nine remaining horses back to Lincoln. Subsequent investigations by Frank Warner Angel, the Home Secretary's special investigator, confirmed that Tunstall was mercilessly shot dead by Jesse Evans, William Morton, and Tom Hill. Tunstall's murder was witnessed from afar by several members of his party, including Richard Brewer and Billy the Kid. This tragic event marked the beginning of the infamous Lincoln County War. To avenge Tunstall's murder, his cowherds and other local citizens formed a collective known as the Regulators, motivated by their desire for justice in a system where territorial criminal justice is heavily Inspired by Murphy and Dolan's allies. While the Regulators at various times included dozens of American and Mexican cowboys, a core group of about a dozen or so main members was known as the "iron clad". Among them are such figures as McCarty, Richard Dick Brewer, Frank McNab, Doc Scurlock, Jim French, John Middleton, George Coe, Frank Coe, Jose Chavez y Chavez, Charlie Bowdre, Tom O'Folliard, Fred Waite and Henry Newton Brown.
