March 2025 4x4 Group Ride to Box Canyon On the morning of Tuesday, March 25th, 10 rigs with 22 people gathered for the SCF-ORIG 4x4 Group ride. Today's destination was Box Canyon on the Hassayampa River. The name “Hassayampa” comes from a Yavapai Indian word, hayesamo, meaning “following the water as far as it goes.” Apache Indians referred to it as the “upside down river” because it flows underground most of the way.... The group made their way out to the trails via the whoop-de-doos. It's amazing how different this ride is in a 4x4 vice a SxS. Shortly into the ride one of our rigs suffered a flat tire. A stick punctured the sidewall of the back driver's side tire. Another rider pulled out a kit to plug the flat and within 10 minutes we were back on the trail again. Eventually we arrived at the air down area. Once the rigs were aired down, we entered the Hassayampa and the real fun began. There was a lot of water in the canyon, and everyone had fun driving through the many puddles along the trail. When we reached the end of Box Canyon, we took a break to have some snacks and captured a group photo. We then backtracked and made our way back out of the canyon. We had a great photo op in the narrows and then made a stop at a side canyon where the drivers were able to do some exploring. They found a rope at the end of the foot trail and one of the riders climbed the wall and did some more exploring in that area. Eventually the riders mounted up and continued the journey out of the canyon. We passed several folks riding horses; they also had a bunch of dogs with them. One of the dogs ended up getting separated from the group and began following Chico's Jeep. He stopped and picked up the dog and drove back into the canyon to return him to his owners and then rejoined the group. After leaving the Hassayampa Riverbed, the rigs aired their tires up again and made their way into Wickenburg for a great late lunch at Cowboy Cookin. Several rigs departed from the restaurant and returned home the route of their own choosing, but some also caravanned back to Festival on the trails.
