SA’s fight against foot-and-mouth disease intensifies

South Africa’s fight against foot-and-mouth disease is intensifying, with government aiming to vaccinate 80 percent of the national cattle herd by December as part of a mass vaccination campaign. Officials say the country will require around 28 million vaccine doses to curb the outbreak, with shipments already arriving from Argentina and Turkey to support the nationwide rollout. Meanwhile, in the Eastern Cape, more than 150-thousand doses have already been dispatched to municipalities to protect livestock in high-risk areas. However, concerns are mounting among farmers who say strict regulations preventing them from administering vaccines themselves are slowing protection efforts.
