Revolution Chinese Yoyo is a Chinese yoyo/diabolo team at the University of Michigan. Unlike soloists, Revolution features group coordination to provide a unique performance. While “diabolo” and “Chinese yoyo” are often used interchangeably, they technically refer to two distinct objects. The modern diabolo is a European take on the ancient Chinese yoyo, a toy that dates back to the late Ming dynasty. Traveling through time and across the globe, the diabolo represents East colliding with West - a Chinese tradition changing and being changed by Europeans, resulting in something new. In the same way, Asian immigrants change and are changed by American culture, and we create our own Asian-American identity. Revolution Chinese Yo-Yo embodies this fusion of East and West in its performers, its music, and its juggling prop — the diabolo. The DIA invites you to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month from home with online programs including music, dance, film, art talks, puppets and more. Professional and community cultural groups showcase a blend of traditional and contemporary artistry across several Asian cultures —including Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Mongolian, Taiwanese, Thai and Vietnamese— which promise engaging experiences filled with tradition. #APAHM2021 This program presented in partnership with Friends of Asian Arts and Cultures.
