Various of revelers celebrating STORYLINE: Families and revelers took to the narrow streets of Brazil’s small town of São Luiz do Paraitinga on Sunday for an old-style Carnival celebration to the sound of traditional marchinhas. Handmade costumes, original satirical lyrics and decades-old songs known by heart help preserve its reputation as one of Brazil’s most emblematic countryside street carnivals. With a population of about 10,000, the town expects to welcome nearly ten times that number of visitors. Families with children fill the town square during the day, many choosing the destination for what they describe as a safer and calmer alternative to large-scale parties in major cities. "The Carnival in São Luiz do Paraitinga is the best there is; in São Paulo there’s nothing better," said reveler Tiago Robil. "It’s a Carnival for the whole family, also with joy and fun." As night falls, the marchinhas continue to echo through the hills, sustaining a style of Carnival that contrasts with the scale — and security concerns — of Brazil’s urban mega-events.
