In this video, I’ll break down government programs that provide real help. Some are national and available in every state, like SNAP, Medicaid, SSI/SSDI, and Summer EBT. Others are specific to New York City, like Fair Fares, which gives half-price MetroCards through the MTA. Even if you’re not in NYC, I’ll point you to national programs and show you how to find your local version. Context Unemployment is rising. Over 7 million Americans are out of work, and the job market just saw the largest revision in history, 911,000 fewer jobs than reported. Bankruptcies are increasing, credit card debt is climbing, and since January 2025, more than 800,000 people have been laid off. The federal government is $37 trillion in debt, consumer debt is mounting, and signs of a weakening economy are everywhere. While Washington helped create this crisis, it also runs the programs meant to help us survive it. This economy is brutal. Millions are searching for work while facing the cost-of-living crisis, rising tariffs, and rate cuts that could trigger a collapse. For many, it feels impossible to keep up. I’ve even written to my representatives about expanding unemployment benefits. Right now, the cap is 26 weeks, and no one can survive on that if conditions keep worsening. There’s still stigma around government assistance, but the truth is, if they put us here, it’s their job to help us get out. 6:56 – HRA equivalents in other states 8:00 – What is NYC’s Human Resources Administration 8:21 – ACCESS HRA website & mobile app 9:31 – Who qualifies / how to apply / documents needed 16:13 – The EBT card explained 17:39 – Where EBT/SNAP is accepted (Target, Amazon, Costco, etc.) 19:05 – SNAP benefits 20:24 – Cash Assistance 23:34 – Fair Fares (½ price Metro/OMNY card) 23:52 – Medicaid 27:40 – HEAP (energy assistance) 29:00 – Lifeline phone service 29:37 – WeCARE program 31:50 – Emergency Rental Assistance 32:37 – Additional programs: Summer EBT, Child Support, Housing & Homeless Services, SSI/SSDI, SSP, SNAP-Ed 33:07 – General tips for applying NYC Programs (HRA) and State Agencies In NYC, the Human Resources Administration (HRA) runs programs like Cash Assistance, SNAP, Medicaid, and Fair Fares.
