Perfectly nails the feeling of playing the outcast charged (at least in your own mind) with unpleasant duties, and being viscerally aware that you’ve lost your peers and are powerless to win them back even as you fruitlessly try. Charisma is a divine gift, and ultimately some people have it and some people don’t. I loved the sheer pathos of Barrow being a former Japanese POW, and a legitimately impressive guy, whose personal life was a shambles and who was manifestly unable to command even token loyalty from most of his officers. Astonishing work, deserves far more than the semi-obscurity into which it’s fallen.
