Imagine the middle of the Second World War. Allied armies needed reliable vehicles to quickly recover damaged tanks and heavy equipment. The Kenworth Five Hundred Seventy, introduced in 1943 and also known as the Heavy Wrecking Truck M1, became an indispensable asset for the United States Army. Built on a 6x6 chassis, weighing 6.4 tons and with a 7-meter length, it could carry and repair tanks even in the harshest conditions. Powered by a six-cylinder Continental Model 22-R engine with 145 horsepower, the truck reached speeds up to 72 kilometers per hour and had a 227-liter fuel tank, allowing long-distance operations. Its 21.5-ton winch, 180-degree rotating crane, and onboard welding equipment made the Kenworth Five Hundred Seventy versatile and capable of recovering disabled tanks up to 2 tons. The upgraded M1A1 version appeared in 1944 with an improved crane and lifting capacity. Used across Europe and the Pacific, this heavy wrecker truck ensured continuous mobility of Allied tank forces. Restored examples today showcase American engineering excellence and the crucial role of recovery vehicles during WWII.
