Let's find out! Canon introduced the 35L over a decade ago and today it remains as one of Canon's best selling pro-grade lenses, and for good reason. During all that time, there hasn't been any real significant competition in this focal length and aperture combination. Even today, there is one other offering from Canon - the 35mm f/2 - but it has a loud buzzy AF motor, it's built like a toy, the out of focus rendering is really rough, however, it is capable of producing great images and at only $320 you have to ask, why then do so many flock to the 35L, given that its price point is nearly 5 TIMES as much, tipping the scale at nearly $1,500... Third party competition is limited to a manual focus offering from Zeiss, which is even more expensive than the Canon, there's a new Samyang lens that was just announced... But there is no AF, f/1.4 competitor out there today... So are the Canon loyalists crazy to spend this kind of money on the 35L? Let's find out! BUILD QUALITY: Like most of Canon's L grade lenses, the 35L is made of some very high quality materials, though not made of metal, it is made of high grade plastics, the rubberized focus ring is wide, smooth and rotates very fluidly, it oozes of quality. The USM motor focuses quickly, silently, and very accurately. Like all other L lenses, it comes with a lens hood - unlike all of Canon's consumer lenses. Overall a solid effort, just shy of some of the better built L lenses. FOCUS SPEED AND ACCURACY: Really fast, nearly silent, and deadly accurate. A great performance. A word of caution, like all wide aperture lenses, the depth of field at f/1.4 is so narrow that the slightest bit of movement by the photographer or the subject can result in an out of focus shot, more often than not when a shot comes out "soft" from this lens, someone moved. OPTICAL QUALITY: Astonishing from f/2 onward, however f/2 to f/1.4 its a really good performer, that said, if you're a pixel peeper, you may be disappointed at the lens's sharpness at f/1.4. Its really good, its just not tack, tack sharp as you might expect. Not as sharp as this lens's price or reputation should dictate. Its way better than just passable, its really good, but temper your expectations. CONCLUSION: If you need this focal length and you're a paid event photographer and a Canon shooter, there really aren't too many alternatives out there. You buy this lens because you need to pull off the shot indoors without a flash, in that regard, there is no equal with auto-focus for canon shooters today, so bite the bullet and get this lens. You could get by with the 35mm f/2, however, if you're shooting a wedding, I'm not sure that I'd want that buzzy motor interrupting the ceremony - the reception is another story altogether. All in, the 35mm L is capable of producing breathtaking results, and its abilities in color rendition, out of focus smoothness (bokeh), fast accurate focus and capability in low light, its little wonder why this lens is used by wedding photographers the world over. In a nutshell; BUILD QUALITY - not weather sealed, but solid, just shy of some of Canon's best - 9/10 FOCUS SPEED AND ACCURACY - The USM motor is lightening quick and sniper accurate - 10/10 OPTICAL QUALITY - Pixel peeping aside, the lens is very capable at f/1.4, but frankly a bit below the lens's price point and stellar reputation - 8/10 QUALITY OF RESULTS - Some of the most amazing images I've ever seen were shot with the 35 L, you have to consider the whole scene, when you do, you realize why this lens is such a hit - 10/10 VALUE - Given its lack of competition, Canon can charge what they want for this lens, and they do. If Sigma were to come out with a 35mm f/1.4 that is anywhere near the gushing reviews I've seen for their 85mm, then it should definitely be a consideration... However, today, this is really the only game in town - 7/10 OVERALL - 44/50 - RECOMMEND! FINAL WORD: With its formidable combination of wide aperture, fast focus and beautiful out of focus rendering, it's little wonder why this lens is such a hit for the wedding photographer set, just temper your sharpness expectations at f/1.4
