At the beginning, I'm trying to explain my theory for how to make positive reinforcement actually work to the best of its capacity. Positive in my opinion is not permissive and although my goal always is to use the least physical pressure possible, I am also not going to allow a dog to push/pull me around as it will only further reinforce doing so. We are however marking and rewarding every behaviour we want to see as a means of driving him to want to repeat those actions. You should be able to see that I use a downward hand movement before I pull back, this protects a dogs neck and gives me a bit more of a sturdy pull for redirection at the same time. I highly recommend getting this muscle memory down before working in interesting environments. The pressure if directed properly goes to the back of the neck, above the shoulders and protects the trachea and delicate throat area. In my opinion, it is imperative that Rupert understands that he does not have the power to ignore, especially as he becomes larger.
