A surgeon's dedication saves lives in Mosul, Iraq

Orthopedic surgeon Dr Omar Amouri's life and work were upended by the recent conflict in Mosul, Iraq, when his daily rounds were done under terrifying conditions. In 2017, he fled the city and began working at a nearby field hospital in Hamam al-Alil, where he and other dedicated health workers played a critical role saving the lives of children, women, and men injured during the Mosul operation. Hamam al-Alil is one of four field hospitals established and supplied by the World Health Organization (WHO) in early 2017. The hospitals received patients from WHO-coordinated trauma stabilization points on the frontlines during the Mosul operation. Thousands of lives were saved because patients were triaged within the first hour of injury. Today, WHO continues to support the four field hospitals near Mosul. Two of the facilities will soon be relocated to West Mosul to provide health services while damaged hospitals are being rebuilt. Read the full story: http://www.who.int/news-room/feature-...
