THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ANCIENT FISHING VILLAGE IN NORTH DEVON: We have fallen in love with Clovelly, we wanted to share this amazing family visit we had to 'Clovelly' recently with you all. Charles Kingsley (a famous poet, novelist and lecturer in the 1800s) lived in the village as a child and returned many times as an adult. He stayed at what is now known as ‘Kingsley Cottage’ where he wrote ‘Westward Ho!’ in (1855). 'Clovelly' also inspired him to write ‘The Water Babies’. 'And I could smell the soot from the burning chimneys in the air, or was it Tom passing by visiting Ellies house'! You can visit the Charles Kingsleys' Museum and also visit an authentic untouched 'Fishermen's Cottage' and experience the authentic fishermen's life. Then Dickens wrote of 'Clovelly' in A Message from the Sea (1860), and it became even better known. Charles Kingsleys' interest in history spilled over into his writings, which included The Heroes (1856), a children's book about Greek mythology, and several historical novels, of which the best known are Hypatia (1853), Hereward the Wake(1865). Donkey rides are very famous in this fishing village, as they have been used for centuries to go up and down the cobbled streets. To this day, donkeys are still kept and used and donkey rides are available in the summer months for children to enjoy.
