Activists holding banner, candles assembled to spell "Beslan" STORYLINE: Residents of the Russian city of St. Petersburg on Saturday commemorated the victims of the Beslan school siege. At least 334 people were killed, including 186 children and more than 1,100 people were held as hostages during the three-day siege carried out by Chechen militants. The group of 32 militants held the hostages in a school in Beslan, North Ossetia-Alania region, for three days before Russian security forces stormed the building with tanks and heavy weapons. European Court of Human Rights earlier has ruled that Russia failed to protect the hostages of the Beslan school siege and ruled that Russia should pay 2,9m euros. A criminal investigation into the terrorist attack in Beslan was opened on September 1, 2004. It's been 18 years and it's still under investigation. Mothers of those killed have long been struggling to find guilty those officials who did not contribute to the salvation of their children.
