So last week, I wrote that the TCL C755 has an ARC-capable HDMI port. Our soundbar used to be connected there, and with CIC, we could theoretically control its volume using just the Apple TV Remote. The thing is, it doesn't work all the time; it actually doesn't more often than it does. It also isn't giving in the bass department despite having a dedicated subwoofer unit. And with the new TV's center stand, there doesn't seem to be a spot to properly place it anymore... See what I did there? I just came up with excuses to get the HomePods 🙃 But I'd argue that they're valid nonetheless. The soundbar is now re-homed in the Master Bedroom wherein it's used by Mama to help her sleep (spa music), and I went ahead to shop for a pair. Slight problem: HomePods aren't officially sold in the Philippines. Good thing there are stores here that sell imported Apple stuff. I was a bit wary at first, this being my first time buying Apple products through unofficial channels. But since the owners of these stores are mostly passionate enthusiasts as well, my mind was put at ease. Not a lot of black ("MidNiGhT") HomePods going around, apparently. I had to get one from two separate stores. Shoutout to Sid Guanio of Tech Partners and James Francisco of Mobilizer! Smooth transactions, both awesome! 🤘 Anyway, HomePods aren't primarily meant as TV speakers. They're supposed to be smart speakers that play you music, read your message, answer your questions, and other things that Siri will fail to do (half jk). But when they're connected to an Apple TV—which we just so happened to have—it unlocks a feature that might as well be their main selling point. See, a HomePod is said to have a better speaker than smarts. One wastes its potential by having it be just a glorified home assistant. But as great as the speaker of one HomePod is, it would be an objective downgrade for one's TV if one isn't gonna have a stereo setup. So, one's gotta have two. I mentioned the ARC port earlier. It's now occupied by our Apple TV. The Apple TV, on the other hand, is wirelessly connected to the two HomePods, placed 6 feet apart, each equidistant to our sofa. With ARC, the TV can use the HomePods as its speakers regardless of the current input. That means playing the immersive Tetris Effect on PS5 in virtual surround sound, with negligible latency. Ah, the magic of HDMI! Am I happy with its performance? Very much so! It fills the room, doesn't get distorted at high volumes, gives a very convincing illusion of a center speaker, and Mama can now tell Siri to play their theme song without turning on the TV haha. But I gotta say, its ability to break the laws of physics and expand our living space was a bit overstated. I kinda expected to be transported to another world with them. Turns out, they're just really, really good speakers. Finally, if there's anyone absolutely happy here, it would be Apple, for successfully luring us further into their intoxicating ecosystem 🥲 P.S. - A special shoutout to my very good friend and collaborator, @JakeMasca!
