Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson is set to announce what her office is calling a major step forward in a citywide push to rapidly expand shelter and bring more people inside. Wilson will be joined by community leaders, neighbors, and service providers at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. According to the announcement, the mayor’s goal is to open 1,000 new units of shelter and emergency housing with supportive services this year, with services matched to people’s needs. “The city has a responsibility to make sure that everyone can access and enjoy our parks, trails, sidewalks, and other public spaces,” the mayor said. “But we can’t just keep moving people from place to place and calling that progress.” “The single most important thing we can do to address our city’s homelessness crisis is to rapidly expand shelter with supportive services,” Wilson's announcement continued, adding that the mayor is determined to add 1,000 new units this year. In February, Wilson signed CB 121093 and CB 121135, which the city said could accelerate development timelines by as much as five to 12 months. CB 121093 and CB 121135 speed housing production by eliminating unnecessary regulatory review for a range of residential and mixed-use development, including emergency shelter, non-profit housing, and market-rate projects.
