"In patients with acute corneal hydrops, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas tamponade has emerged as a viable treatment option. SF6, an inert gas, expands to seal corneal perforations and promote re-epithelialization. Studies demonstrate its efficacy in resolving corneal edema, reducing pain, and improving vision (AAO, 2019). In a retrospective review of 23 patients with acute corneal hydrops treated with SF6 gas tamponade, 87% achieved complete resolution of corneal edema within 2 weeks (Rosenthal et al., 2018). The AAO recommends considering SF6 gas tamponade as a first-line treatment for acute corneal hydrops, particularly in patients with large or central perforations (AAO, 2019)."
