One of my favourite tracks on Coldplay's latest album is pretty straightforward on the piano. Alan's Thoughts: "Trouble" was one of the first songs I ever tried to work out on piano. It was refreshing and inspiring to hear that instrument take centre stage, particularly for a teenager who was not learning guitar. In their second album, the piano continued to play an important role in songs like "Clocks", "The Scientist" and "Amsterdam". Yet Coldplay's sound was becoming bigger and rockier. Their arrangements continued to evolve -- adding synthesizers, string parts, electronic beats and richer guitar effects. In "Ghost Stories" I feel that they have taken a step back -- losing both the anthemic quality that "Rush of Blood to the Head" had and the natural, acoustic feel of "Parachutes". The new album, for me, is perfect background music. Listening through a few times, I struggled to pick out any track that would be worthy of being their next single. Except, of course, for "O" which stands out as a gem amongst a rather bland selection of stones.
