In 1830 Sir Astley Paston Cooper, the accomplished surgeon and anatomist, published Observations on the Structure and Diseases of the Testis. This was the first time much medical attention was paid to the tube that carries sperm- The Vas Deferens. Cooper performed several experimental surgeries on dogs to investigate the anatomy further in 1823. R. Harrison of London performed the 1st human Vasectomy, not for sterilization but to bring about prostate atrophy. Vasectomy surgery, which became very popular in the 1920s, was undertaken by many wealthy individuals, including Sigmund Freud and W. B. Yeats. Since these operations lacked rigorous controlled trials, any rejuvenating effect was likely due to the placebo effect. With the later development of synthetic injectable hormones, this operation fell out of vogue. During the Second World War, Vasectomy was finally regarded as a method of birth control. The first Vasectomy program on a national scale was launched in 1954 in India. Vasectomy, with its low cost, simplicity of technique, and measurable successes in the laboratory, would become even more popular than tubal ligation. Vasectomy is an elective surgical procedure for male sterilization or permanent contraception. During the procedure, the male vasa deferentia are cut and tied or sealed to prevent sperm from entering the urethra and thereby prevent female fertilization through sexual intercourse. Vasectomies are usually performed in a physician's office or medical clinic. Hospitalization is not normally required as the procedure is not complicated, the incisions are small, and the necessary equipment is routine. Once you've made up your mind that you never want to have any more children, there's no more reliable form of contraception than Vasectomy. More than 500,000 men in the U.S. each year choose Vasectomy for birth control. A Vasectomy prevents pregnancy better than any other method of birth control.
