This 20-min video describes in detail how to assess handsaws and backsaws to ascertain whether a flea market or eBay find is worth spending your time and money restoring when saw sharpening. This knowledge is also useful when buying a saw no one else wants, particularly backsaws given that there is a kink in the plate—which is quite easily remedied through the retensioning process described toward the end of the video. Part one describes how to look at the toothline of a handsaw (or panel saw), see whether the kinks or bows are, and giving the plate what I call a ‘flex test’ to examine how much life remains in the plate. Kinks can oftentimes be hammersmithed true, but there is a point beyond no return where they can’t, and this video shows you how to recognize this. Part two of the video shows how to examine a backsaw, with particular attention paid to the plate/back assembly, and how to identify sawback distortions, and whether there is a twist along the plane of the plate which will promote cut friction. Twists can be trued straight, and bows can be retensioned through a ten-second procedure. But there is a point of diminishing returns, so this sections describes how to assess whether the problem area can be fixed. Finally, part three of the video describes the retensioning process for a backsaw with a traditional folded sawback. Retensioning the plate/back assembly takes no more time or effort than it takes to adjust a plane iron, and this procedure can save you a lot of money when considering whether to buy a really nice-looking saw with a kink in the plate, but is in reality something easily remedied through the retensioning process.
