That time Martin Kratt got tickled by a flamingo! This particular flamingo thought Martin's hair looked like a tasty snack! It's all part of the fun of being a creature adventurer! The Caribbean flamingo has a specialized beak with a downward bend. This helps with their unique feeding lifestyle, which is upside down! The bottom jaw or mandible is bigger and stronger than the top jaw, and houses its equally large tongue! Along the edges of their tri-coloured bill are rows of thin plates, called lamellae. Working together, they function like a sieve and trap very small organisms that can fit on just a fraction of your fingernail! The bird sucks water into its bill by moving its tongue quickly up and down, like a piston. It can move it back and forth at a rate of about 6 times per second, while expelling water through the gape of its beak at the same rate! When flamingos aren’t feeding, their bill and lamellae are used to groom their pink feathers…or maybe those of a neighbor or two!
