What is happening in West Bengal's voter list revision? Ayantika from CLATapult breaks down the Supreme Court's massive intervention in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process! 📌 Context of the Crisis: The Election Commission started the SIR to review and update electoral rolls for the 2025-26 Assembly elections in West Bengal. However, the process became highly controversial, affecting tens of millions of people and generating nearly 80 lakh claims and objections. There were reports of unrest and violence in parts of the state, prompting the Supreme Court to warn the West Bengal DGP. ⚖️ The Supreme Court's 4 Big Steps: Judicial Oversight: Judicial officials will now handle objections instead of administrative officers to ensure independent and transparent decision-making. More Judges Deployed: The Calcutta High Court can use additional judges, and if needed, judges from neighbouring states like Jharkhand and Orissa could also be brought in. Final List Publication: The final electoral rolls are to be published on the scheduled date, 28 February 2026, with supplementary lists added further as needed. Leaves Cancelled: The High Court cancelled leaves for all officers involved in the SIR verification till early March to ensure the work continues non-stop. 💡 Why It Matters: This is a rare and powerful judicial intervention in the electoral revision process. The Supreme Court stepped in to protect the fundamental right to vote for millions of people, ensuring that eligible voters are not wrongly excluded from the rolls.
