SHORT SUNDERLAND IN DEPTH RARE FOOTAGE

Short Sunderlands operated from Plymouth RAF Mount Batten throughout wartime here in Devon. The Short S.23, C Class Empire flying boat was designed for long-range passenger and mail transport on British Empire routes operated by Imperial Airways. Powered by four 900 hp Bristol Pegasus XC radial engines and designed to carry a 3.5-ton payload including 24 passengers, it was first flown July 3rd 1936. At the onset of World War Two, RAF Coastal Command was changing over from the Short Singapore to the new Short Sunderland for its maritime patrols. The aircraft was a direct derivative of the civil Short Empire seaplanes of Imperial Airways. They were large aircraft which were to play an important role in combat against for instance the German U-boats. In February of 1993, Kermit Weeks purchased the Sunderland from Edward Hulton. Work on the Sunderland continued in England for the next five months. In July, with a crew of five others, Kermit Weeks flew the Sunderland across the Atlantic, making stops in Ireland, Iceland, and Canada. They flew the Sunderland directly to the 1993 Oshkosh Fly-In in Wisconsin.    / @gullperchflyer
