Billed as "Tyson Is Back!", Iron Mike Tyson takes on James Buster Douglas as he looks to defend his WBC, WBA, IBF, The Ring and lineal heavyweight titles in Tokyo, Japan. This fight is considered to be the greatest upset in the history of boxing as Douglas came in as a 42-1 underdog. Tyson was largely seen as the unstoppable force in the heavyweight division with his impressive string of knockouts over all top contenders during that era. Going into the fight, Tyson was undefeated with a record of 37(33)-0, and out of his 33 knockouts, 17 came in the very first round. 25 of these knockouts did not go past the 4th round. In 1986, Tyson made history by becoming the youngest world heavyweight champion after knocking out Trevor Berbick in the second round with multiple knockdowns in dominant fashion. In 1987, he added the WBA and IBF titles to his notch by outpointing Bonecrusher Smith and Tony Tucker respectively. With his win over Tucker, Mike Tyson became the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion. In 1988, Tyson knocks out Michael Spinks in 91 seconds, again in devastating fashion. The Ring recognized him as their world champion due to his victory over Spinks and Tyson added The Ring belt to his collection. Tyson was rated No. 1 heavyweight as well as the No. 1 P4P fighter in the sport, which is rare as the No. 1 P4P fighter is usually given to a non heavyweight. In only the 5th year of Tyson’s professional career (in 1989), he had already racked up a number of notable victories; Carl Williams, Larry Holmes, Michael Spinks, Trevor Berbick, Tyrell Biggs, Pinklon Thomas, James Smith, Marvis Frazier, James Tillis, Frank Bruno, Tony Tubbs and Tony Tucker. Due to Tyson’s dominant reign as Undisputed Heavyweight Champion at that time, few gave Douglas a chance to last a few innings much less beating Tyson. Douglas was seen as nothing more than a quick and easy tune up for Tyson who was set for a megafight against Evander Holyfield, who was also undefeated. In 1987, Buster Douglas lost to Tony Tucker via TKO in the 10th round. Douglas was leading in the scorecards but was exhausted late in the fight, allowing Tucker to capitalize en route to a stoppage. However, Douglas would bounce back with 6 consecutive wins which include two notable decisions over Trevor Berbick and Oliver McCall in 1989. Thus, he was ranked No. 7 by Ring Magazine which earned him the opportunity to face Tyson. As a contender, Douglas had a mixed success in his career and held a record of 29-4-1 going into the fight with notable wins over Greg Page, Randall Cobb, Trevor Berbick and Oliver McCall. Douglas suffered several setbacks before the fight; the death of his mother, the son of his mother suffering from a kidney ailment and 24 hours before fight night, he had contracted flu. However, Douglas came into the fight in the best shape of his career and was more determined and sharp than he ever was before. He showed no signs of intimidation, and was focused; keeping his jabs popping, holding Tyson in the inside and stayed discipline without getting wild. Tyson on the other hand, looks to simply take Douglas out with one clean shot, which he did in the 8th round but Douglas survived the knockdown and immediately came back the next round to deal heavy damaged to Tyson who was already badly battered at that point. Douglas’ victory over Tyson became on of the most memorable moments not only in the sport of boxing but in the history of sports. Some have attributed Tyson’s loss to certain factors which include his association with Don King and the dismissal of Kevin Rooney. Many considered Tyson to have no trained properly, and unfocused as he took Douglas lightly. Nonetheless, Douglas’ victory is one that cannot be denied as Douglas had trained diligently and put on an unforgettable performance that will endure.
