Captain Fikre Selassie Wogderess Predicts Quick Victory Over Somalia in Ogaden War | February 1978

Tuesday, February 7th 1978. Footage of Captain Fikre Selassie Wogderess, the Secretary General of the Provisional Military Administration Council of Ethiopia, predicting an early victory against Somalia in the Ogaden War. He was speaking at a news conference n the National Assembly Hall in Addis Ababa. Reuters Text: "Captain Fikre Selassie told newsmen that Ethiopian forces would soon be triumphant in their war against Somalia in the Ogaden region. He said the mass of Ethiopians, however, considered the war in Ethiopia's Red Sea province of Eritrea more important then fighting against Somalia. And referring to the whole conflict in the Horn of Africa, he said that the African people had to solve their own problems, in their own way, within the framework of the Organisation of African Unity. Captain Fikre Selassie also warned what he described as "Imperialists and their reactionary accomplices" to refrain from supplying arms to the Mogadishu government." Source: Reuters News Archive. Note: In 1996, along with other memers of the Derg, Fikre was put on trial for crimes committed during the Mengistu era. The trial ended in 2008 and he was sentenced to death. Ths was commuted to life imprisonment in 2010. He was freed on parole after spending over 20 years in jail.
