Lecture: Scleral and Corneal Inflammatory Disorders

Inflammatory anterior segment disorders such as scleritis, episcleritis and peripheral ulcerative keratitis are commonly encountered in a cornea & anterior segment practice. They may have a prolonged clinical course with periodic exacerbations. These conditions may usually be associated with significant and sometimes life threatening underlying systemic diseases. The ocular manifestations are often the first or only early manifestations of such systemic conditions. Therefore, the ophthalmologist is uniquely positioned to correlate and detect these conditions at an early stage of their natural history. Treatment of these conditions requires an understanding of the underlying pathology and a multi-disciplinary approach involving the rheumatologist/internal medicine specialist.
