李대통령, 목요일 첫 일정으로 한-캐나다 정상회담… 안보•국방 파트너십 발표 South Korean President Lee Jae Myung continues his summit diplomacy in Gyeongju. This morning, the President met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. For more, let's go live to our Presidential Office correspondent Song Yoo-jin. Eun-ji, President Lee met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who's on an official visit to South Korea, at a hotel in Gyeongju on Thursday morning. This marks their second summit, following their first meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada in June. Both leaders reaffirmed their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in their opening remarks. "Canada dispatched some 27,000 troops to the Korean War, with nearly 400 casualties. For us, Canada is more than a friendly partner. It's one of our closest friends, a near-ally." "We're meeting on the 10th anniversary of our Free Trade Agreement. We're meeting at a time when our defense cooperation is deepening. And very importantly, that our cultural ties continue to grow." Following the summit, Seoul and Ottawa issued a joint statement announcing the launch of the ROK-Canada Security and Defense Cooperation Partnership, the first of its kind for Canada in the Indo-Pacific region. Another pillar of the statement is that the two countries concluded negotiations to create a secure framework to share sensitive data between the two governments. With defense topping the agenda, the two leaders also discussed South Korea's Hanwha Ocean being one of the final contenders for a roughly 44 billion U.S. dollar submarine contract with Canada. "President Lee expressed hope that South Korea could play a leading role in strengthening Canada's defense capabilities. Prime Minister Carney said he was well aware of Korea's submarine technology and looked forward to seeing it firsthand during his visit to Hanwha Ocean's shipyard in Geoje on Thursday." Beyond defense, the two leaders agreed to expand cooperation in energy, critical minerals, and culture as well. Throughout the day, President Lee is scheduled to hold several other bilateral meetings with leaders of APEC member economies, including his first summit with Japan's new Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi. And talking about summits, there's also been a major development following yesterday's ROK-U.S. Summit. That's right. This morning, President Trump posted on social media that he had "given approval to build a nuclear powered submarine," mentioning that the sub would be built in Philadelphia. This comes after President Lee asked the U.S. to allow South Korea to obtain fuel for nuclear-powered submarines so that it can build some which would in exchange, ease the U.S. military's burden in the region. Under the current South Korea-U.S. nuclear cooperation agreement, Seoul is barred from using nuclear power for military purposes and from producing or importing highly enriched uranium, the fuel needed for such submarines. In response to Trump's announcement, the Presidential Office said it welcomes his decision and will work closely with the U.S. throughout the follow-up talks. Before we let you go, Yoo-jin, tomorrow marks the start of APEC 2025 KOREA's main event, the Leaders' Meeting. What can we expect there? The two-day APEC Leaders' Meeting officially begins on Friday under the theme "Building a Sustainable Tomorrow CONNECT, INNOVATE, PROSPER." Here’s National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac on the significance of this year's meeting. "Through the APEC Leaders' Meeting, the South Korean government will lead discussions on future-oriented issues such as AI, low birth rates, and aging populations. This will be the first time the Leaders' Meeting will address AI and demographic shifts. The first session on Friday morning will focus on enhancing cooperation for trade and investment. It will be attended by representatives of the 21 APEC member economies, as well as the Crown Prince of the UAE and IMF's Managing Director. President Lee, who is chairing the meeting, will then have lunch with the APEC Business Advisory Council, followed by a welcome dinner in the evening.
