The city of L´Hospitalet has experienced an enormous growth within the last years. Since the late 70´s the city has developed by building new highways, new buildings and changing their overall urban design drastically. However, during these changes, the Llobregat river, the only body of water to the city was left forgotten. These new urban plans didn’t include the river into the city and as new highways were created, the connection between the city and this natural area became close to impossible. In 2011, a 240-thousand-euro project funded by the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona was completed giving birth to an anticipated access between the L’Hospitalet and El Llobregat. This path, that begins close to Bellvitge hospital, was part of a plan to make the citizens and users of the city get a natural space in order to practice sports and recreational activities. The path crosses a vast green space very near to the C-31 Road before reaching to the river. Along the way, the natural soil was substituted by a concrete-paved path, equally increasing the aspect of safety. However, the second part of the project had to be stopped by governmental institutions, because of the financial crisis of 2015. This interruption led to a lack of signs to indicate the path, which is an ongoing issue today, together with poor lighting equipment. The river is very important to most people in Hospitallet as they use the area for social gatherings, recreational activities, sports or even just to get a break from the busy density of the city. However, the complicated and unpleasant path has limited and discouraged those people’s visits to the river. Sky, a citizen of L’Hospitalet, shows, in a video, her entire journey from the city to the river, walking along the path constructed by the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona. She, her friends and their pets experience difficulties due the lack of signs throughout the path as well as a very dangerous part where they walk alongside cars on a highly -trafficked motorway. Some improvements in the access of the river are demanded by the citizens of L’Hospitalet since the area started to get recovered from high levels of contamination. In late 20th Century, El Llobregat was very damaged due to the disposal of medical and industrial waste and a high salinity level caused by mines. A lack of natural space was felt in the city since L’Hospitalet gave up on its beach to exchange it with Barcelona. This wouldn’t be true if the city had taken care of El Llobregat, its most valuable natural area. After a couple popular movements, the city administration decided to take action with the help of neighbourhood associations and give the river a little deserved respect. Actions of different natures took place and the river started to recover, coming closer to reconquering its original qualities. Helping to confront these problems are entities such as Apadronament del Riu Llobregat, an association from L’Hospitalet that stimulates people and organize excursions for them to get to know the area around the river, to understand the importance of it and the impact had El Llobregat continued to be neglected. There has also been an incredible effort to clean the river from waste and pollution. The European Week for Waste Reduction has launched a project called Lets Clean Europe of which different cities have been a part of, including Hospitallet with the objective of removing garbage from the water. Following this improvement, the surroundings of the river started to be seen as a natural possibility for recreation, excursions and educational projects. People are becoming aware of the situation and collaborating as the Llobregat river is one of the most biodiverse areas in Spain having various species of flora and fauna. Taking care of the river seems even more important when we remember L’Hospitalet is one of the densest cities in Europe and the river is its biggest natural space available. The recuperation and appreciation of the area must go on. The city of L’Hospitalet needs the river of El Llobregat.
