I’d love to hang out more often. The objective with today’s video, to get a little more specific is to free your voice from your body in a truly meaningful way for you. The exercises in this video lesson serve as a frame of reference for sensations. Once you get a glimpse of this kind of effortless openness, you’ll be looking to recreate those sensations in your everyday signing. This is how muscle memory is made. We’re going to jump right in here and go straight to the heart of what vocal power is. Vocal Power at it’s truest sense is simply what naturally occurs when your body is open and your breath is supportive. Force is what happens when you feel that you have to try really hard for the sound. Force and power are like laws of physics. The more force we have, the more resistance we create. Meaning, the harder we push, the more forcefully it resists. Force always creates a counterforce which traps your voice in your body. And you don’t have to work that hard. Think of power as a simple law of physics. Openness = No resistance. No resistance = more momentum. More momentum = more power. More power = more fun. Oftentimes, singers struggle with creating power because there is a lack of openness, and at the same time, too much push which builds an excess of pressure inside the neck. Or, the muscles which govern the breath become a little lazy, creating lack of support from underneath which forces the muscles in the neck to squeeze overcompensating for the lack of fuel that should always be supplied from underneath. Today, we’re going to be getting out of the way of the sound, clearing the traffic jam so they say. So the keys to the kingdom when it comes to vocal power is playing with your alignment in order to maximize vibrations and being as still as possible while you do. So take about 15 seconds to come into yourself. Simply acknowledge your existence. Feel your heart beating, feel your breath. This will allow for you to turn your nervous system all the way down so that you can feel the subtitles of vibrations happening deep within your body. Now shift your head forward and backward. Notice how the shifting forward and backward motion changes the space available in the throat. Keep your belly loose and your jaw relaxed. With your head feeling like a balloon, lift the weight of head upward. Allow gravity to pull your jaw downward, take one or both of your hands and place them just behind the soft part of your skull. With an easy, relaxed neck tilt your head so slightly as to look up to the ceiling. From this position, feel the openness of your throat and see if you can get the sense that there is a hollow feeling that goes all the way from the top of your throat all the way down to your belly button. Take a few breaths here to feel your breathing easy and low.
