DIY HYDROPONICS SYSTEM / FLOOD AND DRAIN BUILD #Hydroponics #Aquaponics #Rashydroponics #RAS #DIY #Backyardfishfarm #Floodanddrainsetup Hydroponics is one of the common system built by backyard farmers which does not uses soil for the culture. It involves water cycling in the system and usually has its own grow bed and media used in order to culture plants and grow them according to their uses. For my own build I used a Flood and Drain set-up. The system includes a (1) grow bed which will hold the gravel or the media for the plants to erect, (2) a siphon, which will automatically drain the water when it reached a certain level, (3) a sump tank which contains the water and serve as dumping area for the drained water (used water) from the grow bed, (4) a submersible pump which lifts the water back to the grow bed as part of the cycle, (5) crushed rocks as a grow bed media and pipes to connect the system and serve as a material to transport the water vice versa. This set-up is a preparation for my planned aquaponics set-up where in I will incorporate it with the RAS to further augment in saving water in my own fish culture. The hydroponics system (through the plants) will help the water to be recycled in a way that some NITRATES present in the water will be further filtered and used by the plants before it goes back to the fish pond. This is my idea of saving a huge amount of water in a daily basis and as well as growing some greens in my backyard. That's hitting two birds with one stone. This is only the first part and I hope you will watch the second part as I connect the build with my RAS. Enjoy!
