In this video, we explore the impact of bioremediation, specifically mycoremediation on construction waste. Every year, cities produce millions of tons of construction and demolition waste, which often ends up in landfills or gets incinerated, releasing greenhouse gases, polluting our environment contributing to climate change and associated social crises. But what if we could mimic what happens in nature and turn this trash into usable materials? The startup company Mycocycle (one of the Biomimicry Institute's 2022 Ray of Hope Prize finalists) is doing just that. By cultivating and testing different species of fungi, Mycocycle is able to create root-like structures that convert harmful materials into harmless ones. In doing so, they can detoxify construction debris, asphalt, and other forms of waste. Join us to learn how harnessing fungi's ability to turn toxic trash into reusable materials can get us one step closer to building waste-free, sustainable cities. The Biomimicry Institute is proud to have worked with Mycocycle in our 2022 Ray of Hope Prize Program. Mycocycle was just one of ten startups selected from around the world, representing the most promising nature-inspired solutions to our biggest problems. Want to learn more?
