Some call Beilstein: the miniature Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Another name given to this charming little village: The Sleeping Beauty of the Moselle (Dornröschen der Mosel). Once this village was a pilgrimage site. Around the statue of a black madonna, left there by the Spaniards. Long before that, Beilstein was a Roman settlement. Beilstein is located in the Cochem-Zell district, in Rhineland-Palatinate. That is near the border of Belgium, Luxembourg and the north of France. The Moselle river begins in France and enters Germany near Trier. It meanders to Koblenz where it joins the Rhine River that leads to Arnhem in The Netherlands. The Moselle Valley is one of the Wine Regions of Germany, home to Moselle wine. There are many charming villages and hill top castles along the river. This area can transport you back in time and make you wonder in amazement how people lived in those days. The walk from the river into the town offers the most fairytale like view. It is as if you are walking into a studio Ghibli movie, or opening up a picture book. During peak season, more than 1,000 tourists pour daily into this tiny community of just 140 souls.
