Our language, English, has a quality like theme and variation when one listens to those who have come to be influenced by their place of birth. Local in Appalachian traditions are dialect and patterns like few other places. The old, inherited traditions of those who preceded us as settlers in this "new world" have continued to be celebrated by folks in the "old world" though they are rapidly vanishing. Stanley Robertson of Aberdeen, in the NE coast of Scotland was such a "bearer" of story traditions. His aunt, Jeanie Robertson, was one of the more prolific tellers of rare and ancient tales – and Stanley was her favorite "audience." Here I present a bit of a true setting, recounting the day I asked Stanley's permission to tell his tale, "Jack and the Factor".
