Meet transplanted horse lover Jackie Fleming. As a little English girl living in Singapore, Jackie had a dream: someday she’d live on a ranch in the American Southwest and have horses!... (sure, that seems plausible...?) Today against all odds, Jackie Fleming owns 1,100 acres outside the picturesque hamlet of Watrous in New Mexico. And not only does she have horses, she created a non-profit sanctuary dedicated to saving wild mustangs, many of whom are sold off each year by the U.S. Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management where an unknown fate awaits them. Times have recently gotten especially tough for the non-profit, and the current long-term drought conditions experienced in northern New Mexico have made continuing ever more difficult... We will see what the future holds. In any case, it is a noble and respectful effort. Jackie is an amazing and devoted person, and the mustangs are smart and VERY playful (they can be seen here nuzzling Gerard while he tries to film). These magnificent and witty little horses serve to remind us that animals are not "commodities" to abuse and destroy at will, especially when they've contributed so much to our history.
