China launches Long March 12 from its first commercial spaceport in Hainan

China's new Long March 12 rocket successfully completed its inaugural flight on Saturday night from the Hainan International Commercial Aerospace Launch Center in Wenchang. This mission is also the first launch from the nation’s first dedicated commercial spaceport, marking another milestone in China’s space exploration. Developed by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, the Long March 12 is the 22nd edition of the Long March family, boasting a diameter of 3.8 meters—larger than the traditional 3.35 meters used since the 1960s. The rocket's enhanced design allows it to carry 30% more propellant and reach 108% more thrust than its predecessors. The new launch site features a versatile interface capable of accommodating various rocket sizes, ranging from 3.35 to 5 meters in diameter. This design allows for efficient rocket transfers within three days and recovery in seven days following a launch.
